San Francisco diary 7: Hello Denmark, my old friend

Obrázek
To be clear I'm writing this while being 2 weeks at home already. I just cannot get myself to write it because a) it was really really long stay in just one place b) I guess I don't like US that much (as you have already noticed). On the very last day we didn't visited any of the company, the main goal for most of us was just to leave... either back to Denmark or for those who weren't annoyed by US enough, to another place or at least another hotel. I personally (because I'm cheap idiot) booked the flight that was supposed to happen at 22.30 so I watched everyone leave. At some high point of that day I went for little walk around to the city. To the financial district, eat, send postcards, go to local Starbucks just to figure out that a) they do have even less plugins that we had in Starbucks where I used to work b) they have even more question about your coffee that we were supposed to ask (would you like to have blond, medium or dark roast? Which roast exactly w...

San Francisco diary 6: and thanks for all the companies

So that was the last day of our visit in star sparkling San Francisco where we haven't found any flowers to wear in our hair. But for this time we went to the last company. LinkedIn. We were supposed to go to the Wordpress but they kind of back of it. (And there is a reason for me to continue using blogger and not wordpress). I have to say, LinkedIn was one of the best companies that we visited during this week. I guess that the Danes most appreciated the fact that our guide was half danish. On the other hand one could complain about the company since he would understand. He showed us around, all the offices, teach us a bit more about LinkedIn and it's goals that they will try to reach any time soon... and the greatest thing, brought us to free lunch. Now I'm not saying it because I would suffer by hunger or anything, but all the googlers and facebook people keep saying how great it is to have gym and food for free but at the same time: "don't even think that you...

San Francisco diary 5: star sparkling poverty

You can like San Francisco all you want, but you'll never escape overwhelming number of homeless that are all around you. Or actually if you are snobish you can escape it, if you go to financial district, where they are not allowed. And that was actually the way we chose when going to the Method. Method seems to be as quite nice working place for designers and coders once you stop smelling that litter perfume they have there. Apparently it is quite famous company, once you work in design market. They did a lot of things that we all have seen at some point (interface of netflix, google cloud, HBO thing that I cannot remember what it was). They have three offices (London, New york, San Francisco). Non of the office has more than 50 employees (they believe in magic in number, I believe it is nonsense and they just want to keep it nice and cozy - kudos!). When you go through their offices, you'll figure out, that they have all kind of games there and that pets are allowed. Wh...

San Francisco diary 4: car and nature

Obrázek
For quite a long time we were wondering on how to explore this tiny part of US and whether we should rent a car or uber driver. Well renting car totally payed of. In one day we have been in Twin peaks, Muir woods, different peak that I cannot remember the name, west coast and randomly driving through the fancy neighborhoods. It is not like we had day without companies, we just had generally only one and so we decided to discover little bit more. First stop Twin peaks. I've heart about it only from some TV series that I have never seen. Apparently it is one of the highest point in San Francisco. Which is kind of unbelievable considering that every single street in San Francisco has some kind of peak and you go either down the hill or up the hill. But this one was really huge and I'm glad that we had car otherwise it would took us the whole day to get there. The view was amazing, you can see the city on one side, the bridge on the other side, tons of houses, every skyscraper ...

San Francisco diary 3: Terms conditions and hockey

We went to visit Adobe. Sounds great right? Well it took us about half an hour just to get there and we figure out that they are in the part of city that just does not feel and smell right. We also almost get attacked by angry homeless man. So in case you don't like Adobe programs or you are struggling with illustrator pen tool for more than sic month like I do... it kind of explains where these ideas comes from.  On the other hand once we opened the building (no, we haven't read the terms and condition, we just crack it open) they all were really nice. And I have to say, lot better than Facebook and Google. more or less just because they showed us different areas of work and not just one. There were girl from creative residence, another girl that talk about Adobe xD, which is program that is in beta so far and lets face it, you'll might end up hating it because it crush a lot. But the interface is a lot better than any of the other program such as Photoshop or Illustrato...

SF diary day 2: And all the company of the world

I believe that I haven't been tired like this in very long time. I also believe I haven't put so much effort in school god knows how long. And when I say effort I mean waking up early. It was first official day of this study trip, day when we visited Facebook and Google in Silicon valley. Also the day when we were supposed to meet at 8.15. Surprisingly it works and 27 people really met at that time and successfully arrived to Facebook as it was our first host. And we met our tour guide. As much as April seemed very nice, she was one of the american where you don't really know whether they are really nice or really fake. Or maybe both, who knows. She was showing us mainly outside of the campus in Facebook. As much as I like it, it seemed as showing of "what do we have here". Don't get me wrong all the restaurant with free food are really nice, all the gyms and arcade as well and it is great that they let us try this, but I thought that we are there to talk ...

San Francisco Diary: Arrival and being all turisty

***This part of blog is part of our assignment for school which is why it is held in English and not Czech like I used to do it.*** Toronto somewhere there... Saturday the first of April. 5.45 am and I woke up. Yup you heard it woke up, not being awake, tired and desperately trying to crawl back home or whatever the place I'm heading for sleep. Woke up. Pack rest of the staff that are necessary for the trip and head to train station in Kolding. For those who are reading this and have no idea of what Kolding is, google it. It is 7th biggest city in Denmark. For those who are from country that has more than 7 million population it is still small and cute town. Shortcut to the Copenhagen airport. Which is about 3 hours later. Seriously, this place should be filled with signs and information and not "you can guess how to get terminal 2 and if you do it in time, congratulation". This airport is still one of the place where you don't have this machine for body s...
